Overview

## What a solar and battery installation involves
A solar PV system turns daylight into electricity using roof or ground mounted panels. The panels produce direct current, which an inverter converts into the alternating current your home uses. Whatever you don't use straight away either charges a battery or is exported to the grid.

A home battery stores surplus solar generation during the day so you can draw on it in the evening, when household demand usually peaks and the sun has gone down. Batteries can also be charged from the grid on a cheaper off-peak tariff, which makes them worth considering even for homes that already have panels.

The electrical side is where safety lives: DC isolation, inverter and battery connections, protective devices, earthing, labelling and the tie-in to your consumer unit. Every installation is tested to 18th Edition requirements and an Electrical Installation Certificate is issued on completion.

What happens if it is left

## Why solar and storage need careful electrical work
Solar panels generate voltage whenever light falls on them, and batteries hold a large amount of stored energy. Both behave differently from ordinary household circuits, so design and installation need to account for that from the outset.

### Live DC cabling
Panel strings stay live in daylight, so correct isolation, routing and protection are essential for safety.

### Overloaded boards
Adding a generation source to an older or crowded consumer unit can leave it unsuitable without an upgrade.

### Poor battery siting
Batteries need a suitable location with ventilation, clearances and protection set out by the manufacturer.

### Missing paperwork
Without proper certification and notification, insurance, resale and export arrangements can become complicated.

### Common mistakes we are called out to fix

- Choosing a system size without looking at how much electricity the household actually uses
- Connecting new generation to a consumer unit that isn't suitable for it
- Fitting a battery somewhere that doesn't meet the manufacturer's installation requirements
- Skipping clear labelling of isolation points for anyone who works on the installation later

Our process

## How a solar and battery installation runs
Each job follows the same clear sequence, so you know what's happening at every stage.

- 01
### Survey
We look at your roof, usage, consumer unit and the best spots for the inverter and battery.

- 02
### Written quote
You receive a quote based on your property rather than a generic package price.

- 03
### Installation
Panels, inverter, battery and isolation are fitted and connected into your installation.

- 04
### Testing
The full system is inspected and tested to 18th Edition requirements.

- 05
### Certification
An EIC is issued and building control is notified directly where the work is notifiable.

What you get

## What solar and battery storage can do for your home

### Use more of your own power
A battery shifts daytime generation into the evening, when you actually need it.

### Less reliance on the grid
Generating and storing your own electricity reduces how much you buy in.

### Smarter tariff use
Batteries can charge on cheaper off-peak rates and discharge at peak times.

### Works with an EV
Solar and storage pair well with a home charge point for lower cost charging.

### Safe, tidy installation
Clear isolation, neat cable runs and labelling, with the property left clean and tidy.

### Documented compliance
Certification gives you a clear record for insurance, resale and export arrangements.

In detail

## Systems, sizing and property types

### Sizing a system to your household
The right system depends on roof space, orientation, shading and, above all, how much electricity your home uses and when. A household that's out during the day benefits more from battery storage, while a home that's occupied all day can use more generation directly.

Looking at your recent bills and usage pattern during the survey helps match panel output and battery capacity to how you actually live, rather than simply fitting the largest system the roof will take.

### Retrofitting a battery to existing panels
If you already have solar panels, a battery can often be added without replacing the array. Depending on the existing inverter, the battery is connected either through a hybrid inverter or a separate battery inverter on the AC side. The survey confirms which approach suits your setup.

### Your consumer unit and earthing
Connecting a generation source places new requirements on the consumer unit, protective devices and earthing. Older boards sometimes need replacing first, which we can carry out as part of the same project. See our consumer unit replacement service for more on what that involves.

### Homes across Locks Heath and South Hampshire
We work on detached and semi-detached homes, bungalows, newer builds and properties with garages or outbuildings across Locks Heath, Warsash, Hedge End, Southampton, Fareham, Titchfield, Park Gate, Whiteley and the surrounding areas. Each property is assessed individually.

Common questions

## Answers before you get in touch

How much does a solar and battery system cost?Pricing depends on system size, roof, battery capacity and the condition of your existing installation, so a survey comes first, followed by a written quote.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels? In most cases, yes. The survey confirms whether your current inverter can work with a battery or whether a separate battery inverter is needed.

Is a battery worth it without solar panels? It can be. A battery can charge on a cheaper off-peak tariff and supply the home at peak times, though the benefit depends on your tariff and usage.

Will my consumer unit need upgrading? Not always. We check its condition and suitability during the survey and will tell you if an upgrade is needed before new generation is connected.

Will the installation be certified?Yes. An Electrical Installation Certificate is issued on completion, with building control notified directly where the work is notifiable.

Can solar work alongside an EV charger?Yes. Solar and battery storage can be planned together with a home charge point, and we also install EV chargers as an OZEV registered installer.

Do you install solar and batteries in my area?Yes, across Locks Heath, Warsash, Hedge End, Southampton, Fareham, Titchfield, Park Gate, Whiteley and the surrounding areas.
